Overview
Pranalytica, Inc. started operations in February 2000, during the first few years, the company built a leading position in tuneable laser spectroscopy-based gas sensing. Notably, Pranalytica was the first to apply the formalism of Receiver Operational Characteristics (ROC curves) to gas sensors, and thus to quantify the probabilities of false negatives and false positives. This analysis has been incorporated into DARPA's "bible" for gas sensors for chemical and biological threats.
Today, Pranalytica is a key worldwide supplier of trace gas sensors to semiconductor fab lines and for environmental monitoring. Its competitive advantage lies in ultra-sensitive gas detection and identification in harsh spectroscopic environments, i.e. in the presence of multiple interfering species. Where competing sensors fall prey to false alarms, its instruments, being largely immune to interferents, continue to reliably measure their target gases.
As its gas sensing needs expanded, Pranalytica began working on quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) as means to extend the window of accessible wavelengths. Its initial QCL effort was supported by the DARPA Laser Photoacoustic Spectroscopy program for the development of a portable sensor capable of reliably detecting chemical weapons agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and explosives. In addition to the overall programmatic success, this effort resulted in the development of the world's first industrial-quality packaging process for QCLs.
After that success, the Pranalytica-led team was awarded funding under DARPA's Efficient Mid-Wave Infrared Lasers program for the development of the next generation, high efficiency and high power QCLs. Leveraging this R&D effort, it has built a leading position in the fields of single mode, widely tuneable QCL systems and high power QCL systems. As a result, it is the only vertically integrated supplier of turnkey QCL systems, controlling the entire QCL fabrication chain from basic QCL structure design to system integration.
Today, Pranalytica has two major product lines.
- Its widely deployed ultra-sensitive gas sensing instruments address many needs in the detection of trace gases in medical, environmental, industrial, and national security applications. Notably, Pranalytica has demonstrated detection of both conventional and nitrate-free, homemade explosives and their precursors in realistic environments, as well as the detection of nitrogen-containing explosives in fertilizer-rich environments.
- Its revolutionary mid-infrared laser systems offer world-leading output power and unmatched ease of operation with applications to many national security related applications, including directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) for the protection of aircraft from shoulder-fired missiles.
Pranalytica operates its state-of-the-art 9,500 sq. ft. facility in Santa Monica, CA, U.S.A. Over half of our employees hold advanced degrees in various fields of science and engineering, assuring that our world-class R&D continues to generate world-class products to address the needs of our customers.
